Some of the best traditions are quiet ones. A small card and a pen at each seat give everyone the chance to say something kind, in their own time.

Choose a card with room to write

A label shape with space for a sentence or two works well. If you have a manual die-cutting machine and a compatible label die, follow your machine’s plate instructions. Cutting by hand with a simple template works too.

Write the prompt ahead of time

Add “I’m grateful for…” to one side before the meal so guests only need to finish the thought. On the back, note the year. You will be glad you did when you look back.

Make it an invitation, not an assignment

Set a card and pen at each place and mention it once. Some people will write right away; others will wait until dessert. Both are perfect. Passing is always okay.

Gather them up

Collect the cards in an envelope or punch a small hole and tie them together with ribbon. Store them with your holiday decorations so they come out again next year.
