Choose the tools that fit what you want to make.
Electronic cutting
A Cricut-style machine follows digital paths. Start with simple cardstock shapes and a material your particular machine supports. The project page should identify the required equipment; an SVG file alone does not guarantee compatibility.
Manual die cutting
A manual machine presses a physical die through paper using the correct plates. You need the die itself, a compatible machine, and the manufacturer’s specified plate stack. Digital SVGs do not replace physical dies.
No machine needed
Scissors, a pencil, paper, and a simple outline can take you a long way. Begin with broad shapes and avoid intricate internal cuts.
A good first project
Try a gift tag. Make one complete sample before cutting a batch, and check size, material, hole placement, and the finished result.
