Make it, step by step
- Wash your hands and use a clean knife and board. Core the apples and slice into thin wedges.
- If preparing a few minutes ahead, toss lightly with the optional diluted lemon juice. Drain and blot gently so the sauce does not slide off.
- Arrange the apple slices in a shallow layer on a wide plate. Spoon on the caramel in thin ribbons, then scatter the chocolate chips.
- Serve immediately with small plates. For young children, adapt the apple texture and shape to their eating skills; raw apple wedges can be a choking hazard.
Ingredients & serving notes
Caramel and chocolate commonly contain milk and soy. Check labels; omitting nuts does not make this an allergy-free recipe.
Keeping it lovely
Keep cut apples covered and refrigerated at 40°F or below. Assemble close to serving; discard perishable portions left out over 2 hours, or 1 hour above 90°F.
For perishable food, use the USDA food-handling guidance. Times and results vary with ingredients and equipment.
Build individual little plates instead of one big platter when guests have different ingredient preferences. Use separate utensils for each topping.
