Make it, step by step
- Cover a tray with parchment and arrange all decorations within reach. Melt the candy coating according to its package directions.
- Lower one cookie into the coating with a fork. Lift, tap gently to remove excess, and slide onto the parchment.
- Add two chocolate-chip eyes and a dotted chocolate-chip smile while the coating is still soft. Repeat with the remaining cookies.
- Let the coating set. Pipe a tiny orange icing triangle between the eyes and smile, following the icing label for drying time.
- Allow the faces to dry fully before moving to a plate or a single-layer container. Set aside one imperfect cookie as your taste-and-texture sample.
Ingredients & serving notes
Commonly contains wheat, milk and soy, with other allergens possible. Read cookie, coating and icing labels; small hard decorations need age-appropriate choices.
Keeping it lovely
Keep in a covered container in a cool spot, using the ingredient labels for storage guidance. Do not stack until the icing is dry.
For perishable food, use the USDA food-handling guidance. Times and results vary with ingredients and equipment.
Make a whole cast: surprised, sleepy, and wonderfully wonky. Use small piped icing dots instead of hard decorative beads.
