Paper-bag monsters with big personalities
Make a family of friendly puppets, then invent a tiny Halloween show.
STARTER GUIDE · AWAITING MAKER TESTING
Let’s make something lovely.
Before you begin: Stay within arm’s reach. Use age-rated washable materials; grown-ups handle cutting. Skip beads, buttons, loose magnets, batteries and other small parts around children who mouth objects.
- 01
Lay a bag flat with its folded bottom facing you; that flap will become the mouth.
- 02
Draw two large eyes on paper and cut broad teeth, ears and a tongue. Keep details large and easy to attach.
- 03
Glue eyes above the fold and the tongue beneath it. Keep glue away from the side openings and mouth hinge.
- 04
Draw clothes and a monster name on the bag. Let all glued pieces dry before sliding a hand inside.
- 05
Ask each maker to introduce their monster, then act out a story about sharing the last pumpkin.
A flexible mouth is more useful than lots of decorations. Test the flap after each addition.
Make it personal
Create a quiet monster, a giggly monster and a monster that loves helping.
The diagram illustrates the project idea; it is not a maker-tested result. Allow additional drying time. Estimated materials cost excludes equipment. Check your equipment and material instructions, verify template dimensions, and make a sample before a batch.
