Paper birds with little fan wings
Give three simple paper birds accordion wings and balance them on a light decorative mobile.

STARTER GUIDE · AWAITING MAKER TESTING
Let’s make something lovely.
Before you begin: Adults handle hole making and hanging. Strings and small paper pieces are hazards for young children. This is room decor, not a baby mobile or toy.
Four illustrated steps, from the first cut to the finishing touch. The cover is an AI-generated concept; the diagrams show the planned construction. This guide awaits physical maker testing.
Drying & finishing: Dry glued wings flat before tying the birds to the dowel.
- 01
Cut three broad birds
Draw a broad 10 cm bird silhouette on scrap paper: a rounded body, small beak and short wide tail. Cut it out as a reusable template and trace three birds on different cardstock colors. Cut them and draw one eye on each side.

Fold the fan wings
Fold each 6 × 12 cm paper rectangle back and forth in about 1 cm pleats, starting along a short edge. Pinch one short end so the other opens into a fan. Glue the pinched folds together and let them set. Attach one fan to the side of each bird as a raised wing.

Find each balance point
After the glue is dry, balance each bird on a fingertip to find a hanging point above its center of weight. An adult punches a hole there, away from the edge. Tie on a short thread and check that the bird hangs roughly level; use a tiny paper tail extension if the beak tips too far down.

Balance the mobile
Tie the three birds at separate points on the dowel, varying the thread lengths. Tie the hanger to both ends of the dowel and lift it to test the balance. Slide the bird ties slightly until the dowel rests level, then knot securely. Hang as decoration well away from young children, cots and beds.

Keep tails short and wings light. If one side of the dowel dips, move that bird a little closer to the center.
Make it personal
Make a family flock with one favorite color per person, or add simple hand-drawn feather lines.

Estimated materials cost excludes equipment. Check your equipment and material instructions, verify template dimensions, and make a sample before a batch.
